Family Reunion Booklet

Many family reunion hosts offer guests a family reunion keepsake. One perfect keepsake would be in the form of a family reunion book,   booklet or scrapbook.

Family reunion books serve as a memorial and memento of the family reunion event.  Parents can take time to read the stories and answer questions about the past with their children.

Each family has unique characteristics in communication, entertainment, dress, joking, hospitality, story telling and other interests which often show up in a family reunion book of memories. When considering what goes into a family reunion scrapbook or booklet here are some helpful suggestions.

  1. Family history time-line

  2. Family crest

  3. Short story of family legends along with hand drawn or painted portraits

  4. A photo of a quilt or other family made craft

  5. Interview with the eldest member

  6. Photo of eldest ancestors memorial

  7. Photo of oldest heirloom with background story regarding its history and authenticity

  8. Photos of past memorabilia

  9. Photo of famous family members

  10. Photos of skits about ancestors wearing period clothing.

  11. Illustrations of period clothing including name, cloth type and dates

  12. Picture of historic documents

  13. Pedigree

  14. Interesting occupations

  15. Words of wisdom

  16. Famous family sayings and
    expressions

It is often best to complete all genealogy research before embarking on a family reunion booklet.  Complete researching the following.

  • Oldest Family Photos
  • Oldest Newspaper article regarding family member
  • Family Tree
  • Family Pedigree
  • Family history
  • Interview with elders
  • Cemetery transcription form
  • Ancestral research work sheet
  • Military records research checklist
  • Heirloom possession verification

Ask family members for prints of old family photos. Often much of this work has been started by older family members who only need to be contacted and consulted with.

Interview eldest elders. Look up published news stories on family members past and present.  Create your family tree and history time-line.

Family reunion committee meetings are a perfect place to request contributions to your family genealogy project.  But don't rely merely on word of mouth. Request official documentation of historical accounts. Certify all information that can be verified and take word of mouth for what it's worth... Don't hesitate to record information and works contributed by eldest members of the family.

A family reunion book can make a wonderful memento for family reunion attendees. Create a fun, fascinating, permanent record of your family heritage. With photos, family history, bio's, games for the kids, it's the perfect personal keepsake. So how do you begin to put them together?

Your family reunion booklet should consist of the following:
1. Cover designs
2. Welcome
3. Family Tree
4. Family History
5. Outline of activities
6. Banquet program
7. Welcome letter from local officials
8. "In Memoriam" section
9. Family history
10. Family directory
11. Family business cards (support our own)
12. Acknowledgments
13. Family photos
14. Other

Your first step is to create file folders for each item listed above.

Next begin to gather information together. Start with your home. Search thru materials in attics, basements, storage bins and boxes and in stored furniture.

Next ask family members for prints of old family photos and interesting historic documents they may have saved. If elder relatives don't mind ask them to accompany you on a "memory lane trip" going thru items in their treasure chest and old trunks stored away in their home. You'll be amazed at what they have put aside.

Interview eldest elders. Look up published news stories on family members past and present. Create your family tree and history time-line.

Family reunion committee meetings are a perfect place to request contributions to your family genealogy project...

Your next step is to file away material collected in the folders you've prepared. Now create a file on your computer named "Family Reunion Booklet". Within the folder create subfolders with the same titles as your paper folders. Now begin to scan materials into your computer dropping the scans in the appropriate folder. Finally store the files of scanned work on a CD-ROM.

Now your ready to begin assembling your book. You can create your own pages or use the colorful templates provided by Fimark's Legendary Heritage Heirlooms award winning Family Reunion Planner below.

Step 3.  Insert appropriate information and images from your scanned file collection Having scanned and filed pictures and documents it's time to do some writing. Take out your notes from your interviews and type them into a Microsoft Word document. Separate stories, historical facts, clichés, metaphors, jokes and words of wisdom by paragraph.

Once you have this recorded it's time to create separate documents per paragraph. Simply open a new blank document and cut and paste the paragraph into the documents and save it to the "Family history" folder you created as explained above.
